Does money make you happy?

Does money make you happy?

There have been times in my life when I've had more money than I need.

I think I was generally happy then. But from 2010 onwards things pretty much turned to custard and it's only recently that the fog has started to clear.

In the last two years I've had many reasons to be unhappy, not least of which is the tax department getting very impatient about the $200k which I owe them. Generally though, some days good and some days are bad: The depth of financial custard doesn't seem to make much difference.

There are plenty of quotes to mine here:

Sophie Tucker said "I've been rich and I've been poor. Rich is better"

Someone someone else said "I wouldn't mind being known as the melancholy guy in the Lamborghini"".

A few years ago I wrote an email to a (wealthy) old school friend and in a moment of self-pity I bemoaned my lack of financial security.

His response was "Money doesn't mean shit if you're not happy." He said the happiest person he knows as a friend who "hasn't got a pot to piss in".

Happiness doesn't always equate to lack of stress, but it often does: Currently I have a lot to worry about and I'm generally a bit fed up.

But for some reason I woke up this morning and, despite everything, I find that I'm in pretty good spirits.

I'll take that.
